about

‘Not everybody can appreciate this aspect of Devi. For an agitated mind, she appears very terrifying and wild. But in reality, this aspect of Divine Mother, represents true calmness.

Kal means black. In that deep darkness she absorbs everything.
Those who have done silent meditation, or in the cave during Earth Meditation... it is completely black. In that state of mind in the cave, there is a complete state of silence which you don’t find outside. You are inside the womb of the Mother...

...Each person holds something deep inside. And yet, there is so much hindering us from opening to feel love. We continuously repress and close off our capacity to express ourselves. Thanks to Bhakti you open.
Kali represents that, the multitude of possibilities in life.... She represents that aspect of Bhakti where the mind is fully absorbed into calmness.'
-Paramahamsa Vishwananda

Lyrics:
Is my mother Shyama black?
Shyama is sometimes white, at other times yellow,
again blue, and vibrant red.
The Mother’s true nature is beyond my understanding
and in contemplating Her my life has dissolved.
Is my mother Shyama black?
Shyama is sometimes spirit, sometimes matter,
and the transcendent void beyond both.
Lost in Her ecstasy, Kamalanta has gone insane.
Is my mother Shyama black?’
-Kamalakanta Bhattacharya (1769-1829) Shyama Sangeet (Kali Ma devotional lyrics)

"The poems of Kamalakanta were later sung by mystic Sri Ramakrishna, who himself was a great devotee of the Divine Mother. These devotional songs would often send Sri Ramakrishna into an ecstatic state as he became absorbed in contemplation of the Divine Mother. Many of these songs are recorded in The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, which at one point mentions, "... he (Ramakrishna) would spend hours singing the devotional songs of great devotees of the Mother, such as Kamalakanta. Those rhapsodic songs describing direct vision of God ..."

lyrics
